Unit 12 Research: Cabaret Clubs

Through discussions, which was recorded while myself, Lou, Jack and Daytona were starting to create logos, it was decided that the type of club to set Saints and Sinners would be a cabaret club. As this will be our setting, I need to gain more knowledge on what they are and what they involve, this can therefore help me determine if my characters will be effected, as they could either be characters or acts for the club, something which I will have to take forward and use in the rehearsal process.

While trying to look into what cabaret clubs are, I was able to look into clubs around Britain and what they offer. One website talks about the London Cabaret club, which not only offers food, but also performances through guest performers, there are multiple acts through the night t provide entertainment. I have had to be wary of this source and what I use as Jason Allan Scott, the author copied the definition of a cabaret club from Wikipedia, therefore, I could not guarantee that section as a reliable source. However, he also included a quote by Jennifer Kennedy, stating that for cabaret performers, they “allow the performers to be on same level as the audience. When I’m dancing for you its like 3D, right in your face.” I thought that this quote would be useful while looking into the rehearsal process as my Saint Joan monologue will be an act in the cabaret club, therefore, I can take on this quote and add it to how I rehearse Saint Joan, to perhaps lean in and get close to everyone else in the club.

Following this, I then went to look at separate cabaret clubs which offer different entertainment, the first one I looked at was in Indiana, USA, called ‘The Cabaret!’. This club included on their website what a cabaret club is and its origins. I was then able to find out through this source that they started in Paris in the nineteenth century, describing their atmosphere to be casual, with musical and poetry acts performing along with food. This spread throughout Europe, with acts including comedy being ever more popular in these cabaret clubs, before moving to America later. I was hesitant to use this source at first, however, the  club provided contact details of their club n their website, therefore, as they can be contacted, they are not hiding and could be contact with if there are any issues or concerns about the information.

The second cabaret club I looked at was one situated in London, called ‘The London Cabaret Club’, which, as stated in my previous paragraphs, also includes dining with form of entertainment. They started out as a pop up event, before launching their own club, providing entertainment every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. In the music and dance acts they provide, they link it all to a British theme, ranging from the 1960’s all the way to the 1990’s, with them mentioning on their ‘about us’ page that their Christmas show had a 1920’s theme, which was originally planned for our Saints and Sinners show. Like ‘The Cabaret!’, which I previously looked at, there is also not an author, however, there is again contact details so if there are any questions, they can be called or emailed.

The final club I decided to look at ‘The Black Cat’ cabaret club in London, however, they do not have a set club, instead they tour to places in London, particularly around the West End. Their style of performances ranging from comedy, acrobatics, dance and song, being described to be performed as ‘walk about performance’, where the performers do not perform in one set space. Their current upcoming performances take place at the ‘Hippdrome’ and ‘ZÉDEL’. There is a theme with these clubs that the page does not have an author, but there are again contact details so any questions mean they can be put in contact with.

How it effects Saints and Sinners performance:

In terms of what we have created so far with our Saints and Sinners piece, we can use what I have researched about “The Cabaret” in the USA, which has a relaxed atmosphere to put into our performance, which can then be relaxing for the audience. As one of my characters is a cabaret act, Saint Joan, I can use the quote: “allow the performers to be on same level as the audience. When I’m dancing for you its like 3D, right in your face.” while rehearsing for Saint Joan, to make her monologue in their faces, moving closer to them while I am on stage. Currently, we have a mix of acts, drama, songs and dances for cabaret acts, which is exactly what I have been able to get from this research.

  1. A very thorough piece of research and carefully cross-checked too. Can you say (or point me to where you have said) what you think the implications of this are for ‘Saints and Sinners’ – in layout or performance style or audience engagement? Make sure you show where your good research has paid off!

    1. Thank you Lynn. I have updated my cabaret club research with a paragraph about how this will effect the performance. I have also updated my Saint Joan reflective journal rehearsal from Tuesday 25th April where I have added what I used from that research.
